What's up ya'll. Every so often, I will spotlight and mention a unique piece of my musical toolbox. This week i'm near-complete with finishing my next song, "Walk with Me" that i'm excited to show to the world! So yeah, NEW SONG coming soon!
So my first piece of gear is not so much a physical piece of gear, but a unique software plugin called Nova 67p, by software dev Vladg Sounds.
Nova 67p is multiband compressor/EQ that i've used fluidly in almost EVERY project.

This VST plugin was originally designed in 2015 by Vladg Goncharov (as a last minute idea, coincidently) and submitted into the KVR dev challenge. Later on, Vladg would join forces with Tokyo Dawn Records, and as such, Nova 67p was redesigned and upgraded and is now called TDR Nova. I will talk about TDR Nova later or another time, as to me, is a little different than Nova 67p. But that's not a bad thing though either.
Like i said before, I use this VST on all my song projects. It introduced me to multiband compression and i just love it. The concept behind mixing with multband compression, is addition by subtraction. THe common thought in EQing for years has been just to raise a frequency with a little gain and call it a day. This can actually ruin your mix, as ppl often get caught up going round and round trying to eq everything to death, which pushes your mix out of phase, and no one wants that!
Most projects i'll stick it on my master bus as an insert, and it really makes the entire mix instantly expand and come alive. Every now and then, if i need to sidechain a certain item like kickdrum or vocal, it's super easy in Reaper. It's alot like a miniature version of Ozone that isn't CPU heavy so you can do multiple instances no problem. But although i do say i use it on almost every project, these days i mostly use it as a reference tool for headphone mixing. I mostly use the newer TDR Nova nowadays for heavier tasks.
